Description

Pulmonary disease can be a temporary or permanent contraindication for diving.


 

Absolute permanent contraindications to diving:

(1) history of spontaneous and/or recurrent pneumothorax

(2) presence of severe lung disease

 

Patients who must be evaluated by an experienced physician in order to be cleared for diving:

(1) history of pneumothorax that is not spontaneous or recurrent

(2) history of thoracic surgery or penetrating trauma

(3) history of mild to moderate lung disease

(4) current smoking

 

Reasons for temporary deferment from diving (pending recovery):

(1) upper or lower respiratory tract infection, including bronchitis or cold

(2) allergic response
