Description

A number of conditions have been followed by the Guillain-Barre Syndrome. For some a causal relationship may exist, while for others the association is unclear and may be coincidental.


 

Post-infectious:

(1) viral upper respiratory infection (Influenza, Coxsackie, other)

(2) Mycoplasma pneumoniae

(3) Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)

(4) Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

(5) HIV

(6) Herpes simpex virus (HSV)

(7) viral hepatitis A or C

(8) Campylobacter jejuni infection

(9) Escherichia coli

(10) other Gram-negative enteric bacteria

(11) malaria

(12) toxoplasmosis

 

Paraneoplastic Guillain-Barre:

(1) Hodgkin's disease

(2) chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)

 

Other:

(1) hyperthyroidism

(2) autoimmune disease

(3) sarcoidosis

(4) pregnancy

(5) surgery

(6) bone marrow transplantation

(7) envenomation

(8) drug therapy

(9) renal disease

(10) post-vaccination (if capable of inducing anti-ganglioside antibodies)
