Description

Night sweats can occur with a large number of conditions. Its significance depends on its definition, severity and any associated clinical findings.


 

Classes of causes for night sweats:

(1) malignancy (see below)

(2) infections (see below)

(3) endocrine disorder (see below)

(4) rheumatologic disorder (see below)

(5) drugs (see below)

(6) neuropsychiatric (see below)

(7) environmental cause (see below)

(8) miscellaneous (see below)

 

Malignancy:

(1) malignant lymphoma

(2) leukemia or pre-leukemia

(3) hepatocellular carcinoma

(4) renal cell carcinoma

(5) other tumor

 

Infection:

(1) human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

(2) mycobacteria infection

(3) infectious mononucleosis

(4) deep fungal infection (Histoplasmosis, etc)

(5) abscess

(6) endocarditis

(7) other

 

Endocrine disorder:

(1) diabetes insipidus

(2) ovarian failure (menopause, bilateral oophorectomy)

(3) hyperthyroidism

(4) diabetes mellitus (nocturnal hypoglycemia, autonomic dysfunction)

(5) pheochromocytoma

(6) carcinoid tumor

(7) S/P orchiectomy

 

Rheumatologic disorder:

(1) temporal arteritis

(2) Takayasu's arteritis

 

Drugs:

(1) salicylates

(2) acetaminophen

(3) antihypertensives

(4) phenothiazines

(5) substance abuse (heroin, alcohol)

(6) selective estrogen receptor modulating drugs (tamoxifen, raloxifene)

 

Neuropsychiatric disorder:

(1) autonomic dysfunction

(2) anxiety and/or depression

 

Environmental cause:

(1) excessive covers (overbundling)

(2) high room temperature

 

Miscellaneous:

(1) granulomatous inflammation

(2) chronic eosinophilic pneumonia

(3) Prinzmetal's angina

(4) pregnancy

(5) obstructive sleep apnea

(6) chronic fatigue syndrome

(7) gastroesophageal reflux disease

(8) lymph node hyperplasia
