(1) unfamiliarity with foods, allergens or potential for cross-reactivity
(2) different packaging standards in foreign countries
(3) access to emergency healthcare
(4) availability of routine medications and emergency supplies
(5) need for multiple vaccinations
Risk factors:
(1) comorbid exposures that can make an allergic reaction more hazardous (poor air quality, infection, etc)
(2) travel to a remote location
(3) travel in confined spaces with limited air handling
Needs for a traveler with allergies:
(1) The traveler should know what can trigger personal allergies.
(2) The traveler should have sufficient medications and emergency supplies, with inclusion of some in personal carry-on luggage.
(3) The traveler should carry sufficient documentation of medical needs to get through border security.
(4) The traveler should have a degree of familiarity with the healthcare system(s) in travel destinations and the types of medications that are available.
(5) While not a necessity a companion familiar with medical conditions can be helpful.
(6) The traveler should have an emergency bracelet listing key conditions, ideally in a language that can be understood in the destination country.
