Status epilepticus (SE) may be associated with a number of complications. The occurrence of complications impacts short and long-term survival, especially when multiple.
Patient selection: status epilepticus
Cariopulmonary complications of status epilepticus:
(1) aspiration pneumonia
(2) hypoxemia with reduced oxygen saturation
(3) pulmonary edema
(4) respiratory failure with need for mechanical ventilation
(5) cardiac arrhythmia
(6) hypotension/shock
(7) myocardial infarction
Other complications
(1) neurologic morbidity
(2) acute renal failure
(3) orthopedic injury
(4) rhabdomyolysis
(5) an acid-base disorder
(6) other traumatic injury
Differential diagnosis:
(1) complications for the underlying cause of the seizures
(2) adverse effects from the seizure control medications
