Description

An esophageal stent may be placed to relieve obstruction caused by a benign or malignant lesion. A stent may also be associated with early or late complications.


 

Complications that can occur early or late:

(1) chest pain

(2) bleeding

(3) esophageal reflux

(4) stent migration

(5) esophageal perforation

(6) aspiration pneumonia

 

Late complications include:

(1) stent occlusion/obstruction

(2) tumor ingrowth or overgrowth

(3) anemia (from chronic bleeding)

(4) stricture formation

(5) stent fracture with migration of pieces
