Description

A perilunate dislocation can be easily missed. Failure to adequately manage a perilunate dislocation acutely can result in significant disability for the patient.


 

Complications of a neglected perilunate dislocation include:

(1) chronic pain with or without neuropathic features

(2) median nerve damage with sensory loss

(3) reduced grip strength

(4) wrist instability

(5) traumatic arthritis

(6) avascular necrosis of scaphoid and lunate

(7) limited range of wrist motion

(8) dense fibrosis (which can make delayed surgery difficult)

 

These complications can result in:

(1) work disability

(2) decreased income

(3) depression associated with chronic pain
