Description

Inorganic mercury may be present in a number of compounds applied to the skin. This can result in a number of complications. Often the person may not be aware that mercury is present, especially in ointments prepared in developing countries.


 

Topical compounds containing mercury:

(1) skin lightening creme (inhibits tyrosinase, which produces melanin)

(2) calomel (as a treatment for syphilis)

(3) ointment of yellow mercuric oxide or ammoniated mercury for psoriasis

(4) topical ointments containing metallic mercury

(5) soaps

 

Absorption is affected by:

(1) concentration of the mercury salt

(2) surface area covered

(3) breaks in skin continuity (eczema, impetigo, psoriasis)

(4) duration of application

 

Complications:

(1) contact sensitivity

(2) anaphylaxis

(3) renal toxicity with proteinuria, including the nephrotic syndrome

(4) skin hyperpigmentation
