Bootleg alcohol (moonshine) made by an unscrupulous person can cause serious injury to the imbiber. This can be a serious problem when the operation is run by a criminal organization.
Illicit alcohol may contain:
(1) heavy metals, especially if the still includes lead or has lead solder in its joints
(2) methanol or other toxic alcohol
(3) wide variety of toxic chemicals added for a "kick": petroleum, embalming fluid, etc.
(4) a very high alcohol content (over 150 proof) which can be toxic if undiluted
(5) ethylene glycol if a car radiator is used in the still
(6) denaturing agent (benzene, toxic alcohol, etc) if mixed with industrial alcohol
(7) contaminated ground water
Toxic effects may occur after a single drink or take repeated exposures. The effects may be transient or permanent.
