Description

A patient with one or more risk factors may be more likely to develop osteoporosis.


 

Some of the risk factors associated with osteoporosis:

(1) female gender

(2) advanced age

(3) White or Asian racial descent (as compared to Blacks or Hispanics)

(4) physical inactivity or immobilization

(5) amenorrhea or early onset of menopause in women

(6) no post-menopausal estrogen replacement therapy in women

(7) history of hip fracture in mother (but not other fractures)

(8) long term use of long-acting benzodiazepines, anticonvulsants or corticosteroids

(9) alcoholism

(10) heavy cigarette use

(11) small body frame

(12) low body weight, or significant decrease in weight since 25 years of age

(13) low testosterone levels in men

(14) anorexia or poor dietary intake
