Description

Certain features are commonly associated with the injuries caused by domestic violence. The presence of these features may warrant a more in-depth evaluation of the patient for the possibly of domestic violence.


 

Features of injuries:

(1) central distribution of injuries

(2) injuries to face, head, mouth and neck

(3) defensive injuries of the forearms

(4) injuries in multiple areas

(5) bruises in varying stages of healing

(6) evidence of sexual assault

 

Unexpected neurologic findings:

(1) unexplained stroke in a young person

(2) neurologic symptoms such as hearing and visual loss, headaches, numbness and tingling (even with a seemingly good explanation)

 

Explanation of the injuries:

(1) injuries that do not seem to be adequately explained

(2) injuries that are not explained consistently
