Description

A person may become totally exhausted ("all washed out") after prolonged use of cocaine. This is a diagnosis of exclusion and watchful waiting.


 

Clinical features:

(1) markedly decreased activity, ranging from extreme lethargy to stupor

(2) history of recent and continuous heavy cocaine use

(3) recovery without intervention after 12-24 hours rest

 

Negative findings:

(1) The neurological exam is normal other than for exhaustion.

(2) A drug screen for benzodiazepines or other sedatives is negative.

(3) No evidence of head injury or recent seizure activity.

(4) Normal chemical profiles.
