Certain clues may help to identify a woman in the Emergency Department who is a sex slave.
Clues that a woman may be a sex slave:
(1) The patient is often a foreigner.
(2) The patient is accompanied by someone who will not leave her side.
(3) The patient is afraid of her companion.
(4) The companion maintains control of all documents.
(5) The patient shows signs of physical abuse.
(6) The patient may show other signs of maltreatment.
(7) The patient may not speak at all or may keep to a careful script.
(8) The patient may ask permission to go the bathroom.
