Description

A person who keeps or handles birds needs to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of psittacosis in an infected bird. An infected bird may be asymptomatic or show a range of signs and symptoms ranging from mild to severe.


 

Organism: Chlamyophila psittaci (formerly called Chlamydia psittaci)

 

Clinical findings in a symptomatic bird:

(1) lethargy and depression

(2) shivering

(3) anorexia followed by emaciation

(4) dyspnea

(5) ruffled feathers

(6) closed eyes

(7) serous or mucopurulent ocular discharge

(8) serous or mucopurulent nasal discharge (on beak)

(9) diarrhea followed by dehydration

(10) dark green droppings

(11) excretion of green to yellow-green urine

(12) death
