An infant with neonatal glaucoma may present with a number of signs and symptoms. It is important to diagnose the glaucoma as soon as possible to reduce the risk of permanent injury to the eye.
Screening may be done because of:
(1) a family history of early onset glaucoma or an inherited disorder with glaucoma
(2) the presence of one or more clinical findings
(3) evidence of visual dysfunction
Clinical findings:
(1) overflow of tears (epiphora)
(2) enlargement of one or both eyes (buphthalmos = ox eye)
(3) twitching, tic or spasm of the eyelid (blepharospasm)
(4) photophobia
(5) clouding or opacification of a cornea
Evidence of visual dysfunction:
(1) reduced vision in one or both eyes
(2) nystagmus
(3) strabismus
(4) progressive myopia
