Description

Alonso-Blanco et al developed a clinical prediction rule for identifying a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who is likely to respond to an exercise program. The authors are from Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid and Regis University in Denver.

Patient selection: ankylosing spondylitis

Parameters:

(1) physical role from SF-30 scaled from 0 to 100

(2) bodily pain from SF-30 scaled from 0 to 100

(3) Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) ranging from 0 to 50

• The BASDAI score uses the cumulative score for the 5 components, not the overall average.

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• A patient with a score of 2 was most likely to experience a positive short-term response to an exercise program.

Performance:

• A person with moderate disease is probably more likely to show “improvement” (as defined by the authors) after a short-term exercise program. Exercise might not result in much relative benefit for a person with mild or severe disease.
