Description

Ingestion of sea hare mollusks may be followed by an intoxication that is ascribed to an brominated organic compound.


 

Order: Aplysiomorpha

 

Soecies in Fiji: Dolabella auricularia

 

Possible toxin: a brominated susquiterpene

 

Clinical findings:

(1) vomiting

(2) diarrhea

(3) tachypnea

(4) tremor

(5) tingling

(6) limb pain

(7) restlessness

(8) muscle fasciculations

(9) disturbed consciousness

(10) hallucinations

(11) disturbed coordination

(12) fever

 

Sensation is not disturbed.

 

Recovery may take hours to a few days.
