Description

Ortiz et al developed the Clinical Hepatic Encephalopathy Staging Scale (CHESS). The authors are from Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain.


 

Abilities:

(1) able to give the current month of the year

(2) able to give the current day of the week

(3) able to count backwards from 10

(4) able to follow simple commands, like raising the arms

(5) able to understand what you are saying

(6) able to stay awake and alert

(7) not difficult to wake up from a sleep

(8) able to talk

(9) able to speak correctly without stammering

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 9

• The higher the score the worse the hepatic encephalopathy.

• A Glasgow Coma Score should be calculated if the patient is scored 9 (comatose).

 

Limitation:

• Minimal hepatic encephalopathy may not be detected and will require additional neuropsychological testing.
