Description

The Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is a complication of exogenous gonadotropin therapy given to induce ovulation. A similar reaction from endogenous gonadotropins is hyperrectio luteinalis. The syndrome can be clinically graded based on the signs and symptoms.

vomiting and/or diarrhea; abdominal distension

mild ascites present

thromboembolism; impaired renal function; leg or vulval edema

moderate to marked ascites and/or hydrothorax; hepatic dysfunction

severe

 

where:

• Thromboembolism is due to hypercoagulability and may be arterial or venous. It may be due to high estrogen levels.
