Description

Absorption of epinephrine used as vasoconstricting agent during surgery can result in a number of clinical findings, some of which are serious.

Clinical findings of epinephrine intoxication:

(1) ventricular tachyarrhythmias with or without tachycardia

(2) pulmonary edema with hypoxemia

(3) heart failure

(4) hypertension

(5) intracerebral hemorrhage

Some findings occur immediately while others such as pulmonary edema may be delayed.

A patient receiving a dilute epinephrine solution to reduce blood loss should be carefully monitored during and after the exposure.
