Description

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, Ecstasy) is a popular drug for adolescents and young adults who frequent dance clubs and rave parties.


 

Clinical findings considered desirable in users:

(1) euphoria and pleasure

(2) self-confidence with decreased anxiety and inhibitions

(3) feelings of empathy and closeness with others

(4) feelings of being at peace

(5) stimulation with energy and decreased need for sleep, food and drink

(6) hallucinations

 

Complications:

(1) severe dehydration

(2) exhaustion

(3) nausea

(4) chills and sweating

(5) blurred vision

(6) psychosis

(7) confusion

(8) anxiety and/or depression

(9) muscle tension with involuntary teeth clenching

(10) hyperthermia with rhabdomyolysis

(11) cardiac dysfunction

(12) renal failure

(13) hyponatremia with cerebral edema

(14) serotonin syndrome

(15) acute hepatic failure

(16) cerebrovascular accident (stroke)

 

Chronic use can result in addiction and neurotoxicity.

 

The drug is synthesized in clandestine laboratories so dosage and contaminants vary. In addition substitution with other drugs is common.
