Risk factors for aural myiasis:
(1) age < 10 years of age
(2) debilitation
(3) widened outer ear canal
(4) chronic otorrhea
Clinical signs and symptoms of otomyiasis:
(1) foreign body sensation
(2) ear pain (otalgia)
(3) otorrhea
(4) itching
(5) foul odor
(6) tinnitus
(7) vertigo
(8) restlessness
(9) impaired hearing including deafness
(10) swollen auditory canal
(11) maggots in the external auditory meatus
Complications:
(1) perforation of the tympanic membrane
(2) cellulitis
(3) otitis
(4) mastoiditis
(5) meningitis and/or enetration into the central nervous system (CNS)
