Description

Belperio et al listed clinical and imaging findings in patients with the Bronchioliits Obliterans Syndrome after lung transplant. The authors are from the University of California Los Angeles, University of Michigan and Mayo Clinic.


 

Clinical findings:

(1) shortness of breath

(2) reduced exercise capacity

(3) recurrent lower respiratory tract infections

 

Laboratory findings:

(1) increased neutrophils in broncho-alveolar lavage fluid

(2) chronic isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from respiratory tract cultures

(3) decreased FEV1 and expiratory flow rates on spirometry

 

Imaging findings on high-resolution CT scans:

(1) patchy areas of low and high attenuation (hyper- and hypolucency), giving a mosaic pattern

(2) air trapping on expiration

(3) bronchial dilatation with wall thickening
