Description

Sen et al listed clinical findings that may occur following accidental intra-arterial injection of a drug. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic.


 

Early clinical findings (immediate or during first 24 hours):

(1) pain

(2) flushing

(3) tingling, burning, numbness and paresthesias

(4) muscle weakness and cramping

(5) decreased capillary refill

(6) skin mottling

(7) phlebitis and arterial thrombosis

(8) pulselessness

 

where:

• Patients receiving an intravenous infusion of propofol may complain of pain and burning, so some of the findings listed above may be nonspecific.

 

Delayed findings (48 hours or more):

(1) compartment syndrome

(2) rhabdomyolysis

(3) permanent contractions

(4) ischemic necrosis

(5) gangrene

(6) autoamputation

(7) disability
