Description

A person exposed to a tearing agent may develop clinical findings that may range from simple incapacitation to serious complications.


 

Ocular findings:

(1) tearing

(2) ocular burning

(3) photophobia

(4) conjunctivitis

(5) corneal injury (edema, keratitis, ulceration)

(6) intraocular hemorrhage

(7) blepharospasm

 

Respiratory findings:

(1) rhinorrhea

(2) sneezing

(3) coughing

(4) dyspnea

(5) bronchitis and/or bronchospasm

(6) hypoxemia

(7) pulmonary edema, which may be delayed

 

Dermal findings:

(1) cutaneous rash

(2) erythema

(3) blistering

(4) facial or cutaneous edema

 

Gastrointestinal tract findings (especially if the agent is swallowed):

(1) irritation of mucous membranes

(2) salivation

(3) pharyngitis

(4) odynophagia

(5) abdominal pain

(6) nausea and vomiting

(7) diarrhea

 

Neuropsychiatric findings:

(1) anxiety or hysterical reaction

(2) trembling

(3) agitation

 

Other:

(1) hypertension

(2) stroke

(3) heart attack or failure
