Description

The presence of ticks in the external ear canal (otoacariasis) can result in a number of clinical findings.

Clinical features of otoacariasis (intra-aural ticks):

(1) ear pain, which can be severe

(2) labyrinthitis with vertigo

(3) facial nerve paralysis

(4) regional lymphadenopathy

Otoscopic exam may identify the tick or tick feces. The mucosa of the auditory canal may be edematous which may obscure the tick, especially if a nymph.
