Description

Lymphocytic colitis is one of the subtypes of microscopic colitis. Most but not all patients have a fairly characteristic clinical picture.


 

Patient features:

(1) usually a middle-aged adult

(2) most patients are female

(3) variable history of autoimmune disease or an immunologic disorder

(4) variable symptoms which may include abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, nausea, change in bowel habits, etc)

watery diarrhea

atypical

constipation

 

Findings after a thorough evaluation:

(1) normal imaging findings

(2) absence of pathogenic bacteria on stool culture

(3) usually a normal endoscopic appearance

(4) exclusion of other causes of colitis (Crohn's disease, infection, etc)
