Mitragyna speciosa is a plant from Southeast Asia that has been used as an herbal drug by local inhabitants for many years. When its active agent is extracted and purified there is the potential for dependence and serious side effects.

Active product: mitragynine

 

Mitragynine is an agonist for mu receptors so exerts an opioid-like effect.

 

Street products: kratom (mitragynine), krypton (mitragynine plus o-desmethyltramadol)

 

The drug may be ingested or inhaled.

 

It can act as a stinulant or exert an opiate-like effect depending on the dose.

 

Adverse effects:

(1) With repeated use the person may become dependent with withdrawal reactions.

(2) It may contribute to relapse for a recovering drug addict or alcoholic.

(3) It can cause death, especially if mixed with other drugs or if taken in high doses..

(4) Intrahepatic cholestasis
