Description

Gapapentin in an anticonvulsant with many possible uses. Sudden stoppage of therapy can precipitate a withdrawal reaction.


 

Uses:

(1) anticonvulsant

(2) control of acute or chronic pain, including neuropathy and neuralgia

(3) alcohol or drug addiction, to reduced cravings and for withdrawal reactions

(4) perimenopausal hot flashes

(5) control of recalcitrant migraine or other headaches

 

Clinical findings during withdrawal:

(1) anxiety

(2) disturbed sleep

(3) sweating

(4) nausea

(5) flu -like symptoms

(6) mental status changes

(7) findings associated with condition being treated (seizures, pain ,etc)

 

Signs of withdrawal are more common with a sudden discontinuation of use but can occur even with a slow taper in dose.
