Description

A woman who becomes infected with Toxoplasma gondii during pregnancy may transmit the parasite to her fetus, resulting in congenital toxoplasmosis.


 

Clinical features of congenital toxoplasmosis may include:

(1) intrauterine demise with abortion

(2) premature delivery

(3) intrauterine growth retardation

(4) failure to thrive

(5) unilateral or bilateral chorioretinitis with blindness (if untreated after delivery)

(6) micro-ophthalmia

(7) mental retardation

(8) seizures

(9) microcephaly

(10) hydrocephalus

(11) hypotonia

(12) cerebral calcifications

(13) pneumonitis

(14) hepatosplenomegaly with jaundice

(15) thrombocytopenia

(16) anemia
