Description

A male who abuse anabolic steroids may develop infertility. The severity depends on the duration and intensity of the abuse.


Clinical features:

(1) history of current or recent body building with injection of anabolic steroids

(2) if the abuse starts after adolescence, there was a history of normal male pubertal development

(3) small, strophic testes

(4) oligospermia or azoospermia with reduced motility

(5) serum LH and FSH are decreased or normal

(6) serum testosterone tends to be decreased

 

Management:

(1) Discontinuation of all anabolic steroids.

(2) Injections of hCG (2,000 units 3 times a week for the first month, then 3,000 units 3 times a week for 3 months) based on response of serum testosterone and gonadotropins.
