Description

A patient with trichomoniasis will show changes in clinical and laboratory findings following successful treatment of the infection.


 

Criteria for response to therapy:

(1) resolution of all clinical signs and symptoms (discharge et al)

(2) negative microscopic examination at least 4 weeks after completion of therapy

(3) negative follow-up culture

 

If the patient is asymptomatic then laboratory measures are the only way to determine response to therapy.

 

Differential diagnosis for failure to respond to therapy:

(1) drug resistance

(2) noncompliance

(3) reinfection from an untreated sexual partner

(4) signs and symptoms due to another sexually transmitted disease
