de Freitas et al reported a Climate Index for Tourism (CIT) rating for “sun, sea and sand” (3S) tourism. The authors are from the University of Auckland (New Zealand) and the University of Waterloo (Canada).
Outcome: CIT rating = Conditions were rated by tourists from ideal (7) to very poor (1). A rating of 5 to 7 would be acceptable for a beach holiday while 4 would be marginal. Below that the holiday conditions would be unacceptable.
Parameters:
(1) thermal sensation (using the ASHRAE thermal sensation scale from +4 to –4)
(2) aesthetic appearance (based on cloudiness)
(3) physical factors (based on rain and/or wind)
The ideal conditions (rated 7) would be: warm (ASHRAE +2), cloudiness <= 40%, no rain and a light breeze
Conditions that reduce the holiday rating would be:
(1) temperature outside of comfort zone
(2) cloudiness > 40%
(3) significant rain (lasting more than 1 hour or > 3 mm)
(4) wind speed at ground level > 21 km/h
Any significant rain was considered unacceptable.
