The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) assesses the type and amount of violence portrayed in video games. The various features of depicted violence may range from almost innocent to pathologic. As with any subject for abuse, it is necessary to distinguish appropriate use to enhance a story or to express rebellion from something that is sick and unacceptable.
Violence includes any intentional action associated with :
(1) minor injury
(2) major physical injury
(3) killing
The violence may involve:
(1) planning or discussing acts
(2) passive witness
(3) active participation but in "self-defense"
(4) active participation in wanton mayhem
Targets of violence may include:
(1) humans
(2) aliens
(3) robots
(4) zombies, vampires or other monsters
(5) animals
(6) inanimate object (like a plane)
