Description

The AO-ASIF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Osteosynthesefragen, Association for the Study of Internal Fixation) developed a classification system for fractures, based on location and type of fracture.

Code for location: 42 (tibia/fibula, diaphysis)

Locations:

(1) simple fracture (A)

(2) wedge fracture (B)

(3) complex fracture (C)

Simple Fracture

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

simple fracture of tibia, spiral

fibula intact

A1.1

fibula fractured at another level

A1.2

fibula fractured at the same level

A1.3

simple fracture of tibia, oblique (>= 30°)

fibula intact

A2.1

fibula fractured at another level

A2.2

fibula fractured at the same level

A2.3

simple fracture of tibia, transverse (< 30°)

fibula intact

A3.1

fibula fractured at another level

A3.2

fibula fractured at the same level

A3.3

Wedge Fracture

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

wedge fracture of tibia, spiral

fibula intact

B1.1

fibula fractured at another level

B1.2

fibula fractured at the same level

B1.3

wedge fracture of tibia, bending wedge

fibula intact

B2.1

fibula fractured at another level

B2.2

fibula fractured at the same level

B2.3

wedge fracture of tibia, fragmented wedge

fibula intact

B3.1

fibula fractured at another level

B3.2

fibula fractured at the same level

B3.3

Complex Fracture

Type of Fracture

Fracture Code

complex fracture of tibia, spiral

with 2 intermediate fragments

C1.1

with 3 intermediate fragments

C1.2

with > 3 intermediate fragments

C1.3

complex fracture of tibia, segmental

with 1 intermediate segmental fragment

C2.1

with 1 intermediate segmental and 1 additional wedge fragments

C2.2

with 2 intermediate segmental fragments

C2.3

complex fracture of tibia, irregular

with 2 or 3 intermediate segments
