Description

Svensson et al proposed a classification system for aortic dissection. It incorporates both morphologic and etiologic factors.

Type of Aortic Dissection

Class

classic (presence of an intimal flap separating true and false lumen)

1

medial disruption with intramural hemorrhage/hematoma

2

discrete dissection without hemorrhage/hematoma and with eccentric bulge at the tear site

3

atherosclerotic plaque rupture with ulceration; often with surrounding hematoma that is typically subadventitial

4

traumatic or iatrogenic

5

A dissection <= 14 days is considered acute and > 14 days is chronic.
