Description

Morisada et al developed a simple system for classifying patients with severe trauma. This can help to triage patients especially in resource limited conditions. The authors are from Okayama Hospital in Japan. The term Ugawa classification is derived from the name of the second author.

Patient selection: adult with severe trauma, age range 18 to 98 years

Parameters at presentation to trauma ICU:

(1) age of the patient in years

(2) serum BNP in pg/mL (ng/L)

(3) estimated GFR (eGFR) in mL per min per 1.73 square meter

• This cannot distinguish pre-existing conditions from dysfunction associated with trauma.

• In some ways this is a multi-organ failure score limited to 2 organs.
