Kiuchi et al classified a liver transplant based on its graft-to-recipient weight ratio (GRWR).
Parameters:
(1) weight of the liver to be transplanted in grams
(2) body weight of the recipient in grams
GRWR =
= (weight of liver to be transplanted) / (body weight of recipient)
GRWR |
Transplant Designation |
< 0.8% |
extra-small (XS) |
0.8 to 0.99% |
small (S) |
1.0 to 2.99% |
medium (M) |
3 to 4.99% |
large (L) |
>= 5% |
extra-large (XL) |
Extra-small and small transplants tend to have more problems than larger transplants with lower rates of graft survival. These can be successful but greater attention must be paid in how the graft is handled.
