Description

Jones et al described a classification scheme for congenital aplasia or dysplasia of the tibia in association with an intact fibula. The authors are from the Hospital for Sick Children in London.

Requirements:

(1) congenital defect of tibia

(2) fibula present (although it may be malformed)

Tibia

Other Finding

Type

complete aplasia

lower femoral epiphysis hypoplastic

1a

complete aplasia

lower femoral epiphysis normal

1b

proximal tibia present, distal absent

2

proximal tibia absent, distal present

3

hypoplastic

distal tibiofibular diastasis

4

where:

• Diastasis involves a separation of the two bones, with a defective ankle. While the foot may be normal in structure there is often an equinovarus deformity. The proximal ends may be dislocated as well.
