Classification of Huffman for Endometriosis

Huffman developed one of the early classification schemes for endometriosis.

Sites of involvement:

(1) ovaries

(2) bowel

(3) uterosacral ligament

(4) other

Ovaries	Stage
limited to 1 ovary	I
extensive involvement in 1 ovary, with lesser involvement in the second	II
superficial involvement of both ovaries	II
extensive involvement in both ovaries	III
endometriotic cysts in both ovaries	III

Bowel	Stage
superficial bowel implants	II
infiltrating, nonobstructing bowel implants	III
infiltrating, obstructing bowel implants	IV

Other Sites	Stage
superficial peritoneal implants	I
infiltrating lesions of uterus	II
infiltrating rectovaginal lesions	III
vesical invasion	IV
ureteral invasion	IV

The patient's stage is the maximal stage for all of the sites of involvement.
