Hamanishi described a classification for congenital short femur. The author is from Kyoto University.


 

Features

Type

simple hypoplasia, slightly angulated with mild cortical thickening

I

short femur with angulated shaft and cortical thickening (angulation may be marked lateral or decreased neck-shaft)

II

short femur with coxa vara, straight shaft, with cortical thickening at the lesser trochanter

IIIa

short femur with coxa vara, angulated shaft, with cortical thickening

IIIb

absent or defective proximal femur (absent or fibrous neck and trochanter, absent or small femoral head)

IV

absent or rudimentary femur

V

 

where:

• Coxa vara deformity involves a decreased angle between the axis of the head and neck with the axis of the shaft (taken relative to the long axis of the distal femur, becoming right angled or less).
