Classification:

(1) major type

(2) subtype (for Types 1, 2 and 3)

Features of Injury

Type

single capsular perforation or laceration without extensive soft tissue injury

1

single or multiple capsular perforation or lacerations with extensive soft tissue injury

2

open periarticular fracture with extension through the adjacent intra-articular surface

3

open dislocation

4

associated nerve and/or vascular injury requiring repair

Features of Injury

Subtype

no injury to any articular surface or minimal injury (< 2 mm stepoff or gap; area of comminution < 1 square centimeter)

A

significant injury to a single articular surface (>= 2 mm stepoff or gap; area of comminution >= 1 square cm)

B

significant injury to biarticular surfaces (>= 2 mm stepoff or gap; area of comminution >= 1 square cm)

C

meniscoligamentous disruption

C

 

where:

• The original table has < 2 mm and > 2 mm for stepoff or gap but no "=2".

• The original table has < 1 square cm and > 1 square cm but no "=1".

• There is no subtype category for minor injury to biarticular surfaces.
