Bousquet et al classified allergic rhinitis based on clinical findings. The authors are from the Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) Expert Panel for the WHO.

Symptom effects:
(1) impact on sleep
(2) impact on daily activities (sports, leisure)
(3) impact on school or work
(4) how much trouble
If there are no symptom effects, then the allergic rhinitis is mild.
If there are any symptom effects, then the allergic rhinitis is moderate to severe.
To make this operational in the implementation, the following grading was used for each of the 4 symptom effects:
