Description

Boisen et al listed criteria for classification of testicular position based on clinical and imaging findings.

Location

Additional Finding

Term

abdominal or ectopic; may be inside inguinal canal

may require surgical exploration to locate

non-palpable

entirely within the inguinal canal

may be difficult to palpate; location can be confirmed on ultrasonography

inguinal

above the scrotum, with upper pole in or close to the external opening of the inguinal canal

can be manipulated down from the inguinal canal

suprascrotal

upper part of the scrotum

can be pulled lower but immediately returns to higher position once traction removed

high scrotal

midpoint of testis above the midpoint of the scrotum

stays at the bottom of the scrotum once pulled down

normal-retractile

midpoint of testis at or below the midpoint of the scrotum

normal-scrotal

where:

• The midpoint of the scrotum is referred to as the border between the upper and lower part of the scrotum.

Differential diagnosis:

(1) small testicular size (may be too small to palpate)
