Description

Circumcision can reduce the number of urinary tract infections (UTIs) experienced by a male infant. The impact is more significant if there is a high risk for UTI.

Male infants most likely to experience a reduction in UTI following circumcision have one or more of the following:

(1) high grade vesicourethral reflux

(2) posterior urethral valve (PUV)

(3) phimosis or other disorder of the foreskin

(4) history of recurrent UTI

The lifetime risk of UTI in an uncircumcised male was 32% in an uncircumcised male vs 9% in a circumcised male (Morris and Wiswell).
