Saleh and Mills proposed a scheme for staging patients with cholesteatoma. This can help identify patients who may require more aggressive management and long-term followup.
Anatomic sites for cholesteatoma recognized:
(1) attic
(2) antrum
(3) tympanic cavity
(4) mastoid cavity
(5) Eustachian tube
(6) labyrinth
(7) middle fossa
total number of sites involved =
= SUM(sites involved)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0 (negative for cholesteatoma)
• maximum score: 7
• The higher the score the more likely the patient will have a recurrence.
