Description

In some situations the patient's family may a source of problems rather than solutions.


 

Findings which may indicate problems in the family include:

(1) evidence of neglect or abuse

(2) anger and blame

(3) family members encouraging behaviors associated with ill health

(4) use of symptoms by the patient to manipulate other family members

(5) evidence of addiction and co-dependency

(6) disagreement and arguing about care

(7) inappropriate behaviors or requests

(8) inappropriate expectations for outcome

(9) lack of involvement

 

Identification of a problem family is important in determining appropriate care and discharge planning.
