A characteristic visual field defect is a criteria used for the diagnosis of glaucoma. Foster et al listed features describing a glaucomatous field defect. The authors are from the Institute of Ophthalmology in London.
Testing criteria:
(1) functional defect reproducible (seen on at least 2 occasions)
(2) method used to demonstrate the defect gives a valid representation of the patient's visual status
Field defect features:
(1) asymmetrical across the horizontal midline early in the course of the disease
(2) located in the mid-periphery early in the course of the disease
(3) clustered in neighboring test points
Exclusion criteria:
(1) no other condition better explains the findings
