Description

A urine specimen that is not properly handled will deteriorate over time. Analysis of such a specimen can give misleading results. It is important to reject any urine specimen that has undergone significant deterioration.

Deterioration can occur as a result of:

(1) overgrowth of bacteria and yeast

(2) being frozen

(3) being exposed to excessive light

(4) contamination

Changes that may occur include:

(1) decrease in glucose

(2) decrease in ketones

(3) decrease in urine protein

(4) increase or decrease in nitrites

(5) decrease in bilirubin and urobilinogen

(6) change in color

(7) worsening of odor

(8) increased turbidity due to formation of amorphous precipitates

(9) decrease in cellular elements and casts

(10) overgrowth of bacteria and/or yeast

(11) increase or decrease in pH depending on which micro-organism proliferate

(12) formation of alcohol
