Description

Beckung et al identified factors associated with an inability to walk in a child with cerebral palsy. This can help separate children into groups with a chance or little chance of walking. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Europe contributing to the Surveillance of Cerebral Palsy in Europe (SCPE).

Severe cerebral palsy is defined as both an inability to walk and an IQ < 50.

Parameters:

(1) SCPE type of cerebral palsy (unilateral spastic, bilateral spastic, dyskinetic, ataxic)

(2) intelligence quotient (IQ)

(3) visual impairment

(4) epilepsy (active if any during past year or if receiving antiepilepsy medications)
